The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) maintains the Laboratory Services Commission for the support of State Public Health, Environmental and Food Protection programs. The Laboratory Services Commission provide specific, high quality, and necessary laboratory tests, test data, and test interpretations to federal, state, and local health, environmental, and food protection programs. The data from these tests is required for effective and efficient detection and response to public health, environmental and food protection emergencies and for surveillance and detection of communicable diseases, environmental hazards and their health effects, and food contaminations and their health effects.
The Laboratory Services Commission at the Indiana Department of Health is a fully equipped public health laboratory in Indianapolis and comprises six different divisions:
- Advanced Molecular Detection Division
- Chemistry Division
- Clinical Microbiology Division
- Environmental Microbiology Division
- Quality Assurance Division
- Virology & Biological Preparedness Division
The laboratory works to protect the health of all Hoosiers by providing real-time test results for clinical and environmental testing and responding to threats of public health concerns and emergencies. The laboratory collaborates with local health departments, federal agencies, state agencies, other IDOH divisions, clinical providers, food processing plants, public water systems and others.
